Five sustainable strategies for e-commerce packaging

As more consumers become environmentally conscious, it is imperative that companies adopt sustainable packaging practices. In fact, this should be a goal for businesses in all categories, as studies show that more than half of consumers consider sustainable packaging before buying a product.
The global eco-friendly packaging market was valued at $ 1,641,176.6 million in 2020 and is expected to reach $ 3,37,542 million by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 6.6% between 2022 and 2031. Compared to reusable and biodegradable packaging, the recyclable content packaging category contributed the most to the market revenue with a CAGR of 6.5%.

Brands need to continuously improve their packaging to make it more environmentally friendly throughout the supply chain. Here are five sustainable packaging trends to watch out for in 2022.
1. Compostable packaging
Compostable refers to the ability of a material to decompose organically and return to the soil, ideally without leaving hazardous traces. Compostable packaging is usually made of plant-based materials (such as corn, sugar cane or bamboo) and/or biopoly packaging. For a substance to be classified as biodegradable, it must decompose in home compost within 180 days and in commercial composting facilities within 90 days. The Compostable Mailer from noissue is an example of certified compostable packaging. It is made of PBAT, a polymer that is biodegradable and compostable, and PLA, which is derived from plant materials such as corn and wheat straw. Infant and children's clothing retailer Sun Sea Days is a good example of a retailer using biodegradable envelopes for product shipping.
1. Recyclable Packaging
To be recyclable, packaging has to meet three simple requirements: It must be separable, accurately labelled, and clean. Businesses are required to encourage their customers to recycle certain goods, as some people may not be aware of this.
Recycling is one of the oldest methods of saving the environment known to mankind. Recycling can minimize the number of landfills, protect natural resources, and help individuals save money if practiced frequently. A forthcoming market research report by Future Market Insights (FMI) on the flexible packaging paper market in the global packaging industry shows that market players worldwide are focusing on biodegradable and recyclable packaging material due to the increase in plastic waste generated by packaging.
In 2022, companies will spend more on biomaterials made from starch, biodegradable peanuts, corrugated bubble wrap and organic textiles. These are environmentally friendly materials that offer good protection from the elements.
Below are some popular eco-friendly packaging options:
· Biodegradable Packaging Peanuts: New York has imposed a ban on the use of Styrofoam. The latter is a standard for loose packaging for fragile or otherwise sensitive items because it prevents movement and acts as a shock absorber. Biodegradable peanuts most closely resemble this classic packaging material. They are comparable to Styrofoam but are more environmentally friendly and less expensive.
· Air Pillows Made of Recycled Material: Air pillows are an additional ecofriendly and cost-effective option to polystyrene and bubble wrap. They are available in various sizes and are great for filling holes in boxes and cushioning packaged products. They are tiny, inflatable bags that, when used as packaging, are mainly made of air. This means that less plastic is needed in their manufacture, and they can be supplied with less packaging than alternative cushioning materials.
· Constarch Packaging: Organic cornstarch has made its mark in the market for environmentally friendly packaging. It is derived from the maize plant and has plastic-like properties that make it suitable for a variety of applications that previously relied on plastics.
Plastics are one of the most polluting materials you can use for packaging. Bioplastics are an alternative, similar in appearance and texture to plastic but made from biological ingredients. New materials such as corn starch have been developed as an alternative to hazardous polymers. Polylactic acid (PLA) is made by fermenting sugars derived from corn starch, making it biodegradable and more environmentally friendly than plastic. Even better, it is food safe and can therefore be used for food packaging. Several large companies are starting to use bioplastics for their products. Lavazza, for example, is developing biodegradable coffee capsules made of bioplastic, and other companies are starting to follow suit.
3. Corrugated packaging
Packaging and containers made of corrugated cardboard offer an environmental advantage over other materials. They are mostly made of recycled paper, recyclable and reusable. The reusability is the result of the durability of corrugated cardboard. The durability of corrugated cardboard boxes protects sensitive packaging contents such as food and pharmaceuticals. The adaptability of corrugated boxes is also a dream came true for packaging suppliers. They can be made into any shape and size, which reduces material costs and increases economies of scale. It is easy to see why packaging products from corrugated cardboard makes such an important contribution to sustainability. As if the above benefits were not enough, the antibacterial properties of corrugated boxes keep fruit fresh for three days longer. If you have been putting corrugated alternatives on the back burner, now is the time to bring them into focus.
4. Plantable Packaging
Packaging can have several functions. With plant-based packaging, you can combine the properties of attractive packaging with sustainability. Pangea Organics is a great example of creative, eco-friendly packaging that the rest of the world will soon adopt. The company has developed packaging for soap that contains spruce seeds. Simply soak them in water, place them in the soil and wait for the seeds to work their magic. The packaging is a simple and clever approach to waste reduction. Despite using sustainable materials, it effectively conveys all the necessary information without sacrificing impact or visual appeal.

The Global Economic Model
The Global Economic Model brings together macroeconomic and sectoral forecasts for quantifying the key relationships.
The model is a hybrid statistical model that uses macroeconomic variables and inter-industry linkages to forecast sectoral output. The model is used to forecast not just output, but prices, wages, employment and investment. The principal variables driving the industry model are the components of final demand, which directly or indirectly determine the demand facing each industry. However, other macroeconomic assumptions — in particular exchange rates, as well as world commodity prices — also enter into the equation, as well as other industry specific factors that have been or are expected to impact.
Forecasts of GDP growth per capita based on these factors can then be combined with demographic projections to give forecasts for overall GDP growth.
Wherever possible, publicly available data from ofﬁcial sources are used for the latest available year. Qualitative indicators are normalised (on the basis of: Normalised x = (x - Min(x)) / (Max(x) - Min(x)) where Min(x) and Max(x) are, the lowest and highest values for any given indicator respectively) and then aggregated across categories to enable an overall comparison. The normalised value is then transformed into a positive number on a scale of 0 to 100. The principal explanatory variable in each industry’s output equation is the Total Demand variable, encompassing exogenous macroeconomic assumptions, consumer spending and investment, and intermediate demand for goods and services by sectors of the economy for use as inputs in the production of their own goods and services.
Elasticity measures the response of one economic variable to a change in another economic variable, whether the good or service is demanded as an input into a final product or whether it is the final product, and provides insight into the proportional impact of different economic actions and policy decisions.
Demand elasticities measure the change in the quantity demanded of a particular good or service as a result of changes to other economic variables, such as its own price, the price of competing or complementary goods and services, income levels, taxes.
Demand elasticities can be influenced by several factors. Each of these factors, along with the specific characteristics of the product, will interact to determine its overall responsiveness of demand to changes in prices and incomes.
The individual characteristics of a good or service will have an impact, but there are also a number of general factors that will typically affect the sensitivity of demand, such as the availability of substitutes, whereby the elasticity is typically higher the greater the number of available substitutes, as consumers can easily switch between different products.
The degree of necessity. Luxury products and habit forming ones, typically have a higher elasticity.
Proportion of the budget consumed by the item. Products that consume a large portion of the consumer’s budget tend to have greater elasticity.
Elasticities tend to be greater over the long run because consumers have more time to adjust their behaviour.
Finally, if the product or service is an input into a final product then the price elasticity will depend on the price elasticity of the final product, its cost share in the production costs, and the availability of substitutes for that good or service.
Prices are also forecast using an input-output framework. Input costs have two components; labour costs are driven by wages, while intermediate costs are computed as an input-output weighted aggregate of input sectors’ prices. Employment is a function of output and real sectoral wages, that are forecast as a function of whole economy growth in wages. Investment is forecast as a function of output and aggregate level business investment.
